Born 4.6 billion years ago, the Sun is the keystone of our solar system and is a near perfect sphere. Its constant nuclear fusion gives life to millions of species on Earth. In many ancient tales, the Sun and Moon are siblings, including Japanese folklore and Norse mythology.

The moon inspired humanity's calendar system and its gravtation pull controls the tides of Earth. There are hundreds of legends about the moon, including the "moon rabbit" of East Asian culture and the Roman goddess Luna, who rode her silver chariot across the sky each night.

Mercury is not only the closest planet to the sun, but is the planet with the widest variety in temperatures, from -173°C to 427°C. A year on Mercury is only 88 days long, the shortest in our solar system, and is named after the Roman messenger of the gods, known for his flying shoes.

Venus orbits the sun faster than it rotates, meaning its years are shorter than its days. The planet also revolves clockwise; on Venus, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. Named after the Roman goddess of love, Venus is the brightest star in the night sky.

Earth is the only planet known to contain life, with over 7.4 billion humans calling it home. It was commonly thought to be the center of the solar system until the 15th and 16th centuries, when Copernicus and Galileoproved otherwise, giving birth to modern astronomy. The name of the planet in almost every language is related to "soil".

Our familiar neighbor, Mars was discovered to have soil rich in water by NASA's Curiosity rover in 2015. Mars was associated with war in many ancient cultures, from China to Egypt, with its symbol (commonly used to as a symbol of masculinity) denoting a shield and spear.

Jupiter 210 pieces 22 cm

Jupiter has a mass bigger than twice that of all the other planets in the solar system combined. Its "Red Spot" is actually a massive hurricane-like storm wider than the Earth. Jupiter is named after the Roman king of the gods, whose sacred animal was the eagle.

Saturn's iconic ring was discovered in 1610 by Galileo. He originally thought the ring was Saturn's "ears" because of the poor quality of his self-made telescope. Saturn's ring is mostly made of ice, and is named after the Roman god of agriculture.

Uranus is the only planet named after a Greek deity. It is named after Ouranus, god of the sky, and it is the coldest planet in the solar system at -224°C. At its north pole, Uranus has 42 days of continuous daylight, which means 42 days of night at its south. It is covered in water and methane gas clouds

Neptune 210 pieces 19cm

Neptune has the strongest winds in the solar system, of up to 2,100 km/h (1,300 mph). The planet appears blue because the methane in its atmosphere absorbs red light. Named after the Roman god of the sea, Neptune's symbol is the mighty trident.
